Happy Valley Scarf - As seen on Sarah Lancashire
The much loved BBC British crime drama Happy Valley, starring Sarah Lancashire returned to our screens earlier this year. The series hosted a variety of hand knits and crochet blankets, one being the popular scarf Sarah wears throughout many episodes.
The scarf was a social media sensation so we decided to do a bit of digging and are delighted to say that it was actually made by, local to Black Sheep, Costume Supervisor Sam Green with yarn purchased from the Craft Barn.
Sara & Nic met up with Sam for a chat in the Tea Shop, she is fascinating. Sam has worked on many different series throughout her exciting career, starting with the film Bend It Like Beckham whilst she was still in University. Sam is responsible for sourcing props and organising outfits for cast members on set and has worked on all three series of Happy Valley.
The third series of Happy Valley was actually filmed seven years after the second season and when Sam began to work on it she realised that due to a production company change many items were missing including the original Fat Face scarf that Sarah wore.
Sam had to quickly organise replacements for the missing items. When she could not find a close enough match for the scarf on the High Street she popped into Black Sheep to ask for advice. Tracey was more than happy to assist and recommended James C Brett Marble Chunky to achieve a quick chunky colourful knit. Sam chose shade MC84 the closest in colour to the original scarf - the shade has been our fastest selling one ever since! She cast on 27 stitches on 6mm needles and began a knit one purl one rib until she reached her desired length of 2 metres using just one ball. Make sure that if your first stitch on one row is knitted, that your first stitch on the next row is purled.
The scarf was completed in no time at all and was greatly appreciated by Sarah Lancashire and team and was featured in the latest series. It has become an internet sensation and we are delighted to have played a very small part in that!
