Steeking Workshop with tutor, Debbie Tomkies
Friday 4th April 2025 | 10.15am - 4.15pm
Make your cardies quicker, your armholes neater and your thumbs tidier with the amazing technique of steeking.
Steeking is, quite simply, a term which describes the process of deliberately cutting a knitted fabric. It can be used to create jackets and cardigans from fabrics which have been knitted in the round, but it is also used to create armholes, necklines, pockets and other openings where the item is cut after the main fabric has been knitted.
Even if it seems a little scary, knowing how, when and why you should cut (or steek) your knitting is a very useful skill and nowhere near as scary as it sounds!
You’ll be making a pair of simple wristlets or fingerless handwarmers, perfect for keeping your hands toasty whilst leaving your fingers free for knitting.
No steeking experience is required but you will need to be able to do the knitting basics - cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Being able to knit in the round is advantageous.
What you will learn:
- Why we use steeks
- Choosing good yarn for steeking
- Different types of steeks
- How to create a steeked fabric
- Cutting and finishing your steeked project
- Following steeking charts
- How to make a simple crocheted steek in a circular knitted fabric
- Alternative steeking methods (sewn and felted)
You will need to bring 4mm or 4.5mm needles circular or double pointed needles for working in the round.
Debbie loves to teach and has been a knitter and designer for over 30 years. She has been the Knit Now resident expert for 10 years and is the author of 6 internationally published knitting books so you’ll be in good hands! Debbie’s sessions are fun and enjoyable. The pace is relaxed and there is plenty of time to ask questions and chat.
