Workshop Details
Fair Isle Knitting Workshop with tutor, Debbie Tomkies
Saturday 7th June 2025 | 10.15am - 4.15pm
Colourwork adds a whole new dimension to your knitting – you can go bold and vibrant or soft and muted. Whatever your preference, being able to master the art of choosing the right yarns, understanding why some colour schemes ‘pop’ and other fall flat will ensure you get great results every time. Once you’ve picked your colours, you’ll be learning how to wrangle your yarns for a frustration-free knitting experience as well as picking up valuable tips and tricks for avoiding some of the common challenges presented by using several colours at a time.
You’ll be making a pair of simple wristlets or fingerless handwarmers, perfect for keeping your hands toasty whilst leaving your fingers free for knitting.
No colourwork experience is required but you will need to be able to do the knitting basics - cast on, knit, purl, cast off. You’ll be knitting flat but Debbie will be explaining colourwork knitting in the round and the differences between the two techniques.
What you will learn:
- The language of colourwork
- Choosing good yarn for colourwork
- Making your colourways ‘pop’
- Colour-changes and how to manage them
- Holding two yarns in one hand
- Holding one yarn in each hand
- Following colourwork charts
- Making a simple pair of Fairisle handwarmers
- Troubleshooting – tips and tricks to avoid puckered knits and gappy joins
You will need to bring a pair of 3.75mm needles (or a circular needle with approx.. 80cm cord)
Debbie loves to teach and has been a knitter and designer for over 30 years. She has been the Knit Now resident expert for 10 years and is the author of 6 internationally published knitting books so you’ll be in good hands! Debbie’s sessions are fun and enjoyable. The pace is relaxed and there is plenty of time to ask questions and chat.
